形容词后缀-ible 从古法语-ible 借入中古英语，直接从拉丁语-ibilis。一般在大多数及物动词或动词词干上，构成形容词词。如果以 -d/-t 结尾的动词，若其前为元音时，构成该形容词常要将-d/-t 变为-s, 如：permit 允许→permissible 能允许的。另外，多数含有被动含义的词汇，所对应的名词后缀为 -ibility。

  扩展记忆：①有时本族语形成的 -able 形式的形容词不及 -ible 形式的外来词通用，如：visible 看得见的 {seeable 则不通用 }、credible 可信的 {believable 较少用}；
